How does the French electoral system work?

This election has been held in two stages. On April 10, 12 candidates (6 men and 4 women) took part in the first phase.

The second round of voting was held between the two candidates who got the most votes as no single candidate got the majority. Incumbent Emmanuel Macron was re-elected. Addressing supporters at the Eiffel Tower altar after the victory, Emanuel Macron said the election was over and he would be "the president of all."

Even after the defeat, Marin La Pen said the vote he received was a sign of victory. European leaders, on the other hand, are relieved to have Macron's victory. They feared that far-right candidates would make several anti-EU proposals.

In the second round president Emmanuel Macron will take over as France's next president on May 13.
